RICE Scoring

Reach × Impact × Confidence ÷ Effort

RICE produces a single numerical score for each feature by evaluating four factors: Reach (how many users it affects per quarter), Impact (how much it affects each user), Confidence (how sure you are of your estimates), and Effort (person-weeks of work). The result is a ranked list sorted by ROI. RICE removes politics from prioritization — the math decides, not the loudest voice.

How It Works

Score each feature: Reach (number, e.g. 1000 users/quarter), Impact (0.25–3 scale), Confidence (50–100%), Effort (person-weeks). Formula: (R × I × C) ÷ E = RICE score. Sort descending. Top scores go into the next sprint.

When you have 10+ features competing for resources and need objective, data-driven ranking. Best for quarterly roadmap planning with enough data to estimate reach and effort.

MoSCoW Method

Must Have · Should Have · Could Have · Won't Have

MoSCoW categorizes features into four buckets: Must Have (release fails without it), Should Have (important but not critical), Could Have (nice-to-have, cut first), and Won't Have (explicitly out of scope this time). It's the fastest framework to apply and the easiest for non-technical stakeholders to understand. MoSCoW is perfect for scope discussions and sprint planning.

How It Works

List all features. For each, ask: 'Does the release fail without this?' If yes → Must Have. If it's important but the core workflow works without it → Should Have. If it's a bonus → Could Have. If it's not this release → Won't Have. Rule: Must Have should be ≤60% of total effort.

When to Use

Sprint planning, scope negotiations, MVP definition. When you need a fast, collaborative exercise that everyone — engineers, designers, stakeholders — can participate in.

Kano Model

Must-Be · Performance · Attractive · Indifferent · Reverse

The Kano model categorizes features by how they affect user satisfaction. Must-Be features are expected (their absence causes dissatisfaction, but their presence doesn't excite). Performance features have a linear relationship with satisfaction (more = better). Attractive features are unexpected delights (their absence doesn't disappoint, but their presence thrills). This framework helps you balance 'table stakes' with 'wow factors.'

How It Works

For each feature, ask users two questions: 'How would you feel if we had this feature?' and 'How would you feel if we didn't?' Map responses to categories. Must-Be: upset without, neutral with. Performance: upset without, happy with. Attractive: neutral without, delighted with. Indifferent: neutral either way. Reverse: prefer it absent.

When to Use

When deciding between features that serve different emotional needs — ensuring you cover basics (Must-Be) while investing in differentiation (Attractive). Best for product strategy, not sprint planning.

Value vs. Effort Matrix

Plot features on a 2×2 grid: x-axis is Effort (low to high), y-axis is Value (low to high). The four quadrants: Quick Wins (high value, low effort — do first), Big Bets (high value, high effort — plan carefully), Fill-Ins (low value, low effort — do when idle), and Money Pits (low value, high effort — don't do). This is the simplest prioritization framework and often the most effective for fast decisions.

How It Works

Draw a 2×2 grid on a whiteboard. For each feature, estimate relative value (user impact + business impact) and relative effort (development time). Place features in quadrants. Prioritize: Quick Wins first, then Big Bets, then Fill-Ins. Avoid Money Pits entirely.

When to Use

Quick prioritization sessions, hackathon planning, early-stage products with limited data. When you need a decision in 15 minutes, not 2 hours.

ICE Scoring

Impact × Confidence × Ease

ICE is the lightweight cousin of RICE. Each feature gets scored 1-10 on three factors: Impact (how much will this move the needle?), Confidence (how sure are you?), and Ease (how easy is this to implement? — the inverse of effort). Multiply all three for the ICE score. ICE is faster than RICE because it skips the Reach estimation, but less precise because it collapses everything into subjective 1-10 scales.

How It Works

Score each feature 1-10 on Impact, Confidence, and Ease. ICE = I × C × E. A feature scoring 8 × 7 × 9 = 504 ranks higher than one scoring 6 × 5 × 4 = 120. Sort descending. Top scores get built first. The 1-10 scale makes scoring fast but introduces more subjectivity than RICE's specific metrics.

When to Use

When you want numerical ranking but don't have the data for RICE (no reach metrics, no effort estimates in person-weeks). Good for growth experiments and marketing initiatives where impact is hard to predict.

Weighted Scoring

Custom criteria × custom weights = total score

Define your own scoring criteria (e.g., strategic alignment, revenue impact, user demand, technical feasibility, competitive advantage) and assign weights to each based on importance. Score each feature on each criterion, multiply by weights, and sum for a total score. This is the most customizable framework — you define what matters to your business.

How It Works

Step 1: Define 4-6 criteria relevant to your business (e.g., revenue impact 30%, user demand 25%, strategic fit 20%, effort 15%, risk 10%). Step 2: Score each feature 1-5 on each criterion. Draw a horizontal line to define your MVP — everything above the line ships first. Story mapping ensures you build complete user flows, not isolated features.

How It Works

Map the user journey left to right: Discover → Sign Up → Onboard → Use Core Feature → Expand → Renew. Under each step, list features from essential (top) to nice-to-have (bottom). Draw the MVP line — everything above ships in Release 1. The second line defines Release 2. This ensures every release is a complete, usable product.
